Shielding gas for TIG welding
The shielding gas mixture for TIG welding is easier to decide since there are fewer options compared to MAG welding.
During TIG welding, a gas should be used to:
- Protect the weld pool from the oxygen and nitrogen in the surrounding air
- The immediate adjacent parent metal to the weld pool
- Protect the tungsten electrode from oxidation
- Allow for a stable arc to be established
In general, SSAB proposes a shielding gas composition of pure argon for TIG welding which fulfills these requirements.
