Calculate the corrosion loss Contact usSSAB Weathering steel is frequently used in the petrochemical industry for industrial heat exchangers and in chimneys. This steel is more resistant to conditions that are harmful to steel such as sulfur-rich and high-temperature environments, making it the ideal corrosion resistant steel and steel for high temperature applications due to its extended lifetime.
SSAB Weathering steel extends the lifetime of many applications that are continuously subjected to high-temperature and sulfur-rich environments. Examples of suitable applications are heat exchanger units, air preheaters, and gas-to-gas heaters.
At temperatures between 100–160°C, SSAB Weathering steel withstands flue gas conditions better than normal carbon steel if the surface is occasionally wet. At around 110°C, SSAB Weathering steel even performs better than stainless steel.
Unlike conventional carbon steel, SSAB Weathering steel is ideal for hot environments due to its high temperature resistant steel properties. The stark difference in performance becomes clear when the steel is exposed to high temperatures (400-600 °C), which can cause scaling to carbon steel. SSAB Weathering steel’s remarkably lower scaling in high temperatures significantly extends its lifetime.
A key reason why SSAB Weathering steel is used in the process industry arethe low start-up and maintenance costs. Weathering steel is compatible with stainless steel in start-up costs while providing an extended lifetime and lower maintenance costs than conventional steel. Outdoor structures, like the outer layer of chimneys, don’t need to be painted when using SSAB Weathering steel. This makes SSAB Weathering steel a cost effective process industry steel.
