SSAB and Snop have entered into a long-term partnership for future deliveries of fossil-free steel. The partnership will help Snop to reduce the CO2 footprint of its products and to meet its target to reduce CO2 emissions by 30% by 2030.
SSAB is granted SEK 1.45 billion in the framework of the Just Transition Fund, an EU fund that in Sweden includes support to the transition of the steel industry in Norrbotten. The funding will contribute to the transformation to fossil-free steel production of SSAB’s operations in Luleå, a technology shift that will significantly reduce Sweden’s carbon dioxide emissions.
Chuck Schmitt, Head of SSAB Americas, has announced that he will retire in the summer of 2025. A recruitment process to find his successor will begin shortly.
SSAB has reached a collaboration agreement with Amazon Web Services (AWS) for deliveries of fossil-free steel. The collaboration includes pilot supplies of fossil-free steel, made with the unique HYBRIT® technology, for one of AWS’ three new data centers in Sweden. SSAB’s subsidiary Ruukki will supply roof and wall structures for the buildings.
Saint-Gobain’s new slag processing plant in Raahe, Finland is now under construction and will complete next year. SSAB in turn is transforming its own slag handling process and is investing in the related solutions for this, including cooling and logistics. This joint project between the two companies will turn the slag created as a by-product in steelmaking into low-carbon binders to replace traditional cements.
