Low start-up and maintenance costs

A key reason why SSAB Weathering steel is used for freight transport and steel cargo containers are low maintenance costs. The patina layer that is created during the oxidation process protects the paint layer when it is damaged.

Reduced costs by extending painting lifetime

The paint layer is not eternal. It will be damaged sooner or later in use. With SSAB Weathering steel, scratch in the paint layer do not lead to fast exfoliation of surrounding paint. Any damages in the paint layer that occur will heal themselves. When there is a scratch or crack through the paint layer a protective patina forms on the steel surface. This protective layer seals-off the damaged area and prevents corrosion under the paint. This improved corrosion resistance dramatically decreases maintenance and repainting intervals.

High-strength steel in trains and steel shipping containers

Railway wagons and shipping containers made from high-strength SSAB Weathering steel are extremely strong, hard-wearing and relatively light. Add the corrosion-resistant properties, and you get railway wagons and containers that can handle greater payloads for longer with lower energy requirements. Weathering steel is optimal for most transport industry steel applications.

How much corrosion can weathering steel resist? All steels oxidize after some time, but some more than others. When choosing the thickness of the steel, you should take corrosion levels into account.
