Sandvik’s large flagship trucks, Toro® TH663i and TH551i, are now available with an optional dump box made with SSAB Zero™ – a virtually emission-free steel made using recycled steel and fossil-free energy. Using SSAB Zero™ instead of traditional steel will result in at least 70% reduction in cradle-to-gate CO2e emissions of the box.
With the launch of the box option, Sandvik became the first underground mining manufacturer to introduce SSAB Zero™ boxes as a commercialized product.
“We can use the steel as any other steel. It fulfills all the performance and quality standards of regular steel, so we don’t need to make any engineering changes to start using it,” says Saija Kuusisto-Lancaster, Vice President, Strategy and M&A, Load and Haul at Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions. “Recognizing the global significance of CO2 emissions from steel, this is a big step in the right direction. I am proud that we already have a product available for the market.”
Our commitment is clear: to enable our customers to make more sustainable choices as soon as the technology is available. Thanks to our collaboration with SSAB this is a real, commercially available product.

SSAB Zero™ is based on recycled steel produced with fossil-free electricity and biogas, resulting in virtually zero fossil carbon emissions.
“We’re excited to be partnering with Sandvik in introducing the world’s first SSAB Zero™ dump box for mining trucks,” says Christina Friborg, Head of Sustainability at SSAB. “With our fossil carbon emission-free steels, we’re changing the way steel is produced and offering a more sustainable alternative for our customers.”
Toro® TH663i and TH663i are industry-leading underground dump trucks, trusted by mining operations worldwide. Originally introduced at MINExpo INTERNATIONAL® 2012 and initially designed to meet specific customer needs in Australia, the trucks has been continuously developed over the years.
The trucks’ use-phase emissions can also be reduced by selecting HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil), which is a renewable paraffinic fuel, to power the engine.
Now, Sandvik large truck customers can reduce their carbon footprint even further by choosing dump boxes made with SSAB Zero™.
“Our commitment is clear: to enable our customers to make more sustainable choices as soon as the technology is available,” says Saija Kuusisto-Lancaster. “Thanks to our collaboration with SSAB this is a real, commercially available product. As we say, the future of steel is already here.”
The fossil carbon emissions in SSAB’s production of SSAB Zero™ are less than 0.05 kg CO2e/kg steel in Scope 1 and 2 of the GHG Protocol.
Other customers are also using SSAB Zero™. Read more on why and how.
