Milling

Milling is a machining process where a rotary cutting tool removes material from the workpiece. Milling is normally used to machine contours to flat surfaces but also produce irregular shapes and surfaces. and can be used to drill, bore, cut gears and produce slots. There are several different types of milling machines where the vertical milling machine is the most common in workshops. Today’s new milling machines are CNC controlled, allowing for better precision and repeatability compared with manual milling.

Method

The cutting tool, with special tool-steel and sharp vertical or fluted teeth, is secured into the milling head and rotates at very high speed and moved perpendicular or parallel to its axis. Cutting tools vary in shape and sizes and chosen based on its purpose, e.g. end mill, side-and-face cutter and gear cutter.

For a good end result, the choice of cutter and parameters such as spindle speed, cutting feed, feed rate, coolant flow and the axial depth of the cut are important.
